Development of a Masters in Speech and Language Therapy in Vietnam

Work is underway to develop the Masters in Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) to be held at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The purpose of the masters is to train existing health academics in medicine and physiotherapists to become speech and language therapists. These academic staff will come from the four universities targeted by the USAID funded project on which TFA and MCNV are partnered to host future SALT Bachelor programs. Prof Lindy McAllister, a Director of TFA co-facilitated with Dr Dung from MCNV two workshops in December 2017 and January 2018. These workshops developed the training framework for the masters, and approved Subject Outlines prepared by Prof McAllister for each planned subject in the Masters degree. These two workshops were each attended by around 20 people: senior academics from the universities which will host the Bachelor degrees; academics from other universities with a history of short course training speech and language therapists; Dr Ngoc Dung who has worked closely with TFA for many years to run SALT courses at University Pham Ngoc Thach in HCMC; senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health; graduates of the UPNT courses who now lead SALT service and education developments; representatives from MCNV and Viet Health.

Prof McAllister is working with expert speech pathology academics and clinicians around Australia to develop the syllabus (lectures, teaching materials and readings) for each subject. These academics will lecture and supervise clinical placements in the Masters; several of them come from the University of Sydney under an MOU between the university, TFA and MCNV. The syllabus will be presented at a third workshop in Ho Chi Minh City later in 2018. Prof McAllister, Mrs Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy from MCNV and Mrs Le Thanh Van (Head of the Physiotherapy Department at UMP) have worked on the proposal to establish the masters for approval by the Ministry of Education and Training.
