Ethics Workshop

On 9 January 2020, a face-to-face workshop titled ‘Solving ethical problems in speech and language therapy’ was facilitated by Dr Ben Pham and AVID volunteer Ms Ratna Pilai in Hanoi, Vietnam. Dr Ben is a special educator with a PhD in speech sound disorders, and so brings an understanding of ethics issues from the perspectives of those two professions. The 35 participants attending the workshop included those who graduated from the 2 year and 10 month certificate courses in speech and language therapy and those working with people with communication disorders in Vietnam. Participants enthusiastically engaged in all workshop sections, including types of ethical problems, principles of biomedical ethics, ethical program solving and practice, and self-care and ethics. Prior to the face-to-face workshop, registered participants were required to complete an online workshop titled ‘Introduction to ethics and ethical practice’ which is available online.

The workshops are part of an international project aiming to develop basic ethics education resources relevant to speech and language therapists and other professionals working with people with communication and swallowing difficulties in Cambodia, Ghana and Vietnam. The project is a collaboration between: Speech and Hearing Project (Cambodia), University of Ghana, and Trinh Foundation Australia (TFA). The project received funding from Speech Pathology Australia.

The participants provided positive feedback on both online and face-to-face workshops. They also have expressed their interest in attending further workshops and receiving other resources on ethics in speech and language therapy. Workshops will be held in Ghana and Cambodia in late January and early February.
