Workshop on becoming an Effective Clinical Educator at Hanoi

Hanoi speech therapy graduates were the first in the country to participate in the joint TFA-UPNT workshop focused on the development of clinical education skills. The workshop aimed to encourage speech therapy graduates to get excited about developing a new set of professional competencies and build their confidence to become future speech therapy student supervisors. Eight graduates from across Hanoi and one attending from Ha Tinh Province participated in the two-day workshop. These speech therapists currently work within private clinics, public and private hospitals and centres for children with development disabilities and complex communication needs.

Participants were able to discuss their own personal goals at the beginning of the workshop and stated that they felt more confident at the end of the workshop to step into the role of Clinical Educator. Many graduates are already needing to use clinical education skills in their workplaces, many delivering training sessions to other staff or supporting teachers or nurses to reflect on their practices with their clients or patients and giving feedback regarding swallowing and language support and interventions. Most participants of the workshop are keen to volunteer as speech therapy student supervisors when the opportunity arises.

As the speech therapy profession continues to grow and develop in Vietnam, it will be necessary for more local speech therapy graduates to step into the role of clinical supervisor and offer placement opportunities to students. This is in essence what Trinh Foundation Australia has been working towards for many years, so it is wonderful to see the positive outcomes from the tireless work of many volunteers.
