The therapists at the Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy have been busy with lots of training in the last few months. The speech therapists have attended courses run in HCMC by the Pham Ngoc Thach University graduates and recently completed their final examinations. Their knowledge and skills in speech therapy is growing as they learn from their colleagues in HCMC. At the university, volunteer Australian speech pathologist and cleft palate specialist Janella Christie has provided professional development and more volunteers will be coming later in the year.
I have provided weekly onsite clinical supervision and training in the paediatric clinic, with a focus on setting functional goals, conducting therapy through play and using visual supports. The speech therapists are demonstrating a better understanding of the process of assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, therapy and evaluation and are always keen to learn more.
TFA recently funded the purchase of clinical resources and toys for use in the clinic. There is now a mat to play on the floor and lots of toys for children to choose from!
