Speech Therapy at Dong Nai General Hospital

Dr Chau, Director of Rehabilitation at the Dong Nai General Hospital (DNGH), recently requested support from TFA to support with the development of Speech Pathology services within their rehabilitation department. In September Ms Sarah Day (Australian Volunteer for International Development – AVID) and Ms Quyen Pham (TFA interpreter) visited the rehabilitation unit at DNGH and met with Dr Chau, two rehabilitation allied health staff Ms Phuong and Ms Hien, and AVID Occupational Therapist, Ms Sophie McMahon who has been on assignment within the Rehabilitation Unit since March this year.
Ms Huong and Ms Hien have recently set up a speech therapy clinical space, as they work alongside colleagues to develop a multidisciplinary allied health facility. The group is extremely proud of their efforts in setting up the ST clinic, with Ms Phuong having recently completed a 3-month training program with ST graduates at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Together, all involved in the meeting discussed the rehabilitation unit’s goals and aspirations for speech therapy in the future and how TFA will be able to support the unit to meet these goals. TFA hope to fund a short-term volunteer to visit DNGH in the coming months to promote the importance of speech therapy services to all staff working in the 1400 bed facility. The volunteer will also provide a range of workshops to rehabilitation unit staff on specific swallowing and communication issues faced by patients who suffer from stroke, ABI and other neurological disorders. The volunteer will also have the opportunity to provide specific clinical mentoring to Ms Hien and Ms Phuong during patient consultations, as well as support staff to develop speech therapy clinical pathways and models of care.
